What if she would have done certain things differently? What if she would have relented to his brutal behaviour?
What if she would have used her intellect more than her feelings? What if she wouldn’t have emotionally invested in him?
Her ‘what-ifs’ were only giving her the illusion that he would have been different to her; not acknowledging the fact that they didn’t belong together and nothing would have altered that reality.
